Yellowstone National Park is a crazy cool place. We explored the northern half of the park today. Our first stop was Mammoth Hot Springs. This area has two terraces of hot springs. The air smells of sulfur and the cold air is blasted with steam. Many of the springs in this area are not currently active, but the active ones were a terrace of colors. Our favorite was Canary springs, aptly named for the yellow color. The bubbling water and pools are beautiful. We walked a 1.5 mile loop around the area through the blustery wind and snow flurries but we did get a close encounter with an bull elk. Luckily this time of year they are peaceful and he just went on munching grass. Our next stop was Norris Geyser Basin. On our way there we got to see another black bear and bison. One of my goals was to see wild bison and boy are they big and mystical. The Norris Geyser Basin was a place that I have never experienced before, an ecosystem like no other we have seen in the world. It is full of steam, sulfur, spurting water, boiling caldrons, and a rainbow of colors. You really have to experience it to fully understand. We spent several hours wandering through this crazy habitat, then headed towards Yellowstone Canyon. Unfortunately, the winter weather decided to take full effect again so we had limited views of the canyon and falls, but they were still nice. Our final destination of the day was Lamar Valley, the so called Serengeti of Yellowstone. And it did not disappoint. We saw tons and tons of bison herds, deer, elk, pronghorn, and a grizzly bear. The bison were my favorite today as there were many bison calves present. They remind my of Kalia, with their boundless energy and silly jumps. So far Yellowstone is an awesome place, I can’t wait to see Old Faithful tomorrow!
